Hello, friends! I hope you’re all doing well, and I hope you’re all celebrating the conclusion of Twitter. Er, sorry, I mean, the conclusion of the Disney Legends bracket on Twitter. (Editor’s note: I am typing this paragraph on Friday, November 11. By the time you read it, on Monday, November 14, maybe Twitter doesn’t work anymore! What a fun time that would be.)
Yes, the 128-seed Disney Legends bracket has finally reached its conclusion, and I will now spend some time congratulating the winner, Ub Iwerks.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I knew from the outset that Ub Iwerks would win this bracket. Quite frankly, as much as I admire and respect his work for the Walt Disney Company, I assumed he’d go out early due to voters (some of them, at least) not being as familiar with his work or his name compared to some other candidates. I can’t tell you how glad I am to have been wrong. Iwerks’ output really can’t be diminished, either.
He co-created Mickey Mouse, which ought to be the dealbreaker, but his pioneering work with the multiplane camera — which enabled Disney’s hand-drawn features to replicate the sense of a camera moving through physical space — is enough alone to make him a true legend.
Yes, Ub, you! You’re the winner! Enjoy yourself.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever, Josh, good for Ub Iwerks. I want to know what the next bracket is!” Or, perhaps this reaction is more where you’re at right now.
OK, OK, enough tip-toeing around. Your next bracket? Well, first, let me remind you that I gave you a hint in this post a little while back, in photovisual form.
Give up? Oh, fine.
Get ready for the Disney Parks Live-Entertainment bracket, starting on Monday, November 28. 64 seeds, comprised of past and present parades, fireworks shows, and the like, from Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Two weeks from today. Get excited.
Programming Note
I will be taking one last vacation for the calendar year starting this Saturday, and will be back online on Wednesday, November 23. As such, you’ll get one more post from me for now, this Friday, with a few links to work from the week and any spare thoughts I may have rattling around my brain.
Remember that you can find me on Twitter (presuming it’s still there), Mastodon, and Letterboxd. (And, of course, here, should you wish to throw a comment under the post.)
This is a really long tweet.
I hope you see this I would love a newsletter from you on the big Disney ceo news
