It’s almost time for the weekend! Thank goodness, because even though this was a short week, the weekend is always welcome. (This weekend more than most, though hopefully your week was not as rough as mine.) But as always, we have four more matchups to sift through in the first round of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket. So if you’re as ready as I am, let’s dive right in.
(5) Moulin Rouge! vs. (60) Pete’s Dragon (1977): If you are a fan of Pete’s Dragon, I’m sorry. If it makes you feel better, there are films in this bracket I like less than this 1977 film. But I also think we all are aware what’s winning out of this matchup. Because you can, can, can…vote. (Get it? Do you get what I did there?)

(28) That Thing You Do! vs. (37) South Pacific: Is it possible that I placed That Thing You Do! in this bracket as much because I think the film is still painfully underrated nearly 30 years later, as opposed to considering it a true-blue musical like, say, South Pacific? It is possible. It is also possible that That Thing You Do! is a much better film than South Pacific. In fact, that is definitely true. So do the right thing.

(12) A Star is Born (2018) vs. (53) Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again: Truth be told, I have not seen the sequel to Mamma Mia!, in no small part because I did have the misfortune of seeing Mamma Mia! in theaters in the summer of 2008. I know people like ABBA, they like these movies, etc., but it’s just not for me. A Star is Born easily wins this one for me.
What do you think?

(21) All That Jazz vs. (44) 1776: It’s pretty cool that Mr. Feeny was in 1776 before he taught Cory Matthews all about life, huh? But kidding aside, the obvious winner here is Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz. Sit down, John.

Years ago I made my high school students watch Pete's Dragon as punishment for making my life miserable. 20 minutes in, they were begging to do math instead.
