Can you believe we’re already at the end of the third round of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket? I know, it feels like we just started it, and not just because I’m typing these words on the same day that the round started. But that does help!
Anyway, we have just four spots left in the Sweet Sixteen, which means four more decisions for you to make today. Ready? Let’s go!
(2) An American in Paris vs. (18) The Muppets: That’s the look of three characters who know their days are numbered. I should not have to spend a great deal of time convincing you that An American in Paris is a better overall film than the 2011 version of The Muppets. This should be a pretty big rout. It better be.
Vote for Gene.
An American in Paris
The Muppets
(7) Grease vs. (10) West Side Story (2021): In some ways, these two films have similarities, and not just because they’re both film adaptations of long-running Broadway shows. Both movies have young, dyed-in-the-wool stars; both movies have unforgettable songs; both movies are about teenagers. But y’know, the thing is, Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors to ever live, and Randal Kleiser is not. West Side Story ought to win this one.
Grease
West Side Story (2021)
(3) Meet Me in St. Louis vs. (14) New York, New York: Mother vs. daughter! Father vs. daughter! Old-fashioned versus New Hollywood! As much fun as the premise of this matchup is, and the fact that they’re both about location-based movies, I gotta give this one to Meet Me in St. Louis. The day will come when I won’t vote for this film (I have to admit, it is not my favorite Freed Era musical), but the day has not arrived.
How do you vote?
Meet Me in St. Louis
New York, New York
(59) Rocketman vs. (11) A Mighty Wind: I have no idea how this one will shake out, but while Elton John’s music is undeniably classic, A Mighty Wind is (for me) undeniably a better film than Rocketman. Funnier, lighter, more heartfelt…and it has Fred Willard asking the age-old question. You know the one.
Wha’ happen?
Rocketman
A Mighty Wind
I was preemptively upset about West Side Story losing to Grease, so I was SO glad to see it going the correct way so far.
Aw man. Rocketman is losing. :(
