As we proceed into the back half of the first round of the Ultimate TV Comedies Bracket, I have to tip my cap to all of you who may have seen at least a handful of episodes of each of the 128 series in this bracket, if not the majority of them. I know I cannot merit such a cap-tip — hell, in today’s matches alone, there’s only one show here that I watched every episode of.
But does that stop me from pitting shows against each other? Well, no, because I love chaos. And with that, let’s start today’s votes!
(1) M*A*S*H vs. (64) The Munsters: I mean, obviously, it’s M*A*S*H, he said in spite of having only seen a smattering of clips and episodes of the 11-season wartime comedy. I wouldn’t vote for The Munsters in most situations, but certainly not here.
M*A*S*H
The Munsters
(32) BoJack Horseman vs. (33) The Venture Bros.: So, on one hand, this is a little tough, because BoJack Horseman is the aforementioned show of which I’ve seen every episode. But I’ve seen most of The Venture Bros. as well, and both animated series have some thematic connections, specifically as they each center around the gloom of being a failure to yourself and to others. But I will give this to BoJack, which is arguably the best series Netflix has ever produced.
How about you?
BoJack Horseman
The Venture Bros.
(16) It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia vs. (49) The Last Man on Earth: Yeah, so, this is a safe space, right? A safe space where I can say I have never seen a single minute of an episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Because…yeah. It’s true. I imagine that show’s going to win here, because it hasn’t lasted for 15-plus years by accident. But…maybe one day I’ll watch it?
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
The Last Man on Earth
(17) Silicon Valley vs. (48) The Jeffersons: Two very different series, but call me crazy for thinking The Jeffersons may win here. Silicon Valley has plenty going for it, such as a talented ensemble (and also T.J. Miller) and the presence of Mike Judge and Alec Berg. But The Jeffersons is a quintessential 70s-era sitcom — can the classic win?
What do you say?
Silicon Valley
The Jeffersons
If you do nothing else with your life, make sure to watch M*A*S*H all the way through. It has its ups and downs like any show (in certain unfortunate ways, it's very much of its time), but taken overall, there's no better series.
I'm sorry, who's voting against M*A*S*H at any point in this bracket??
