The Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances Bracket -- Round Two, Day Five
Just a spoonful of sugar...
Did you know that we’re less than a week away from when pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training? (If you didn’t know that, now you do, and if you don’t care, then it’s time to start caring about baseball.) We’re less than a scroll or two away from you voting in today’s matchups, too.
So let’s dive right in!
(1) Julie Andrews, Mary Poppins vs. (33) Robby Benson, Beauty and the Beast: There’s only one Mary Poppins. I love Beauty and the Beast as a whole more than I love Mary Poppins the film, but…there’s only one Mary Poppins. There’s only one Julie Andrews. At some point, I may have to vote against her. Today is not that day.
(16) Richard White, Beauty and the Beast vs. (48) Sterling Holloway, Alice in Wonderland: Yes, it’s true, I will be saying goodbye to Sterling Holloway twice in this round. (Well, that’s if you vote the way I would vote.) Richard White, as I noted in the last round, did a George Costanza move of sorts — he did his one brilliant piece of film work, and that was that. He was out. (I doubt that was fully intentional on his part, but who knows.)
Nothing against the Cheshire Cat, but Gaston is a compelling villain whose voice is truly unforgettable. That’s all White. He gets my vote. How about you?
(8) Carrie Fisher, The Empire Strikes Back vs. (25) John C. Reilly, Wreck-It Ralph: Is it possible that I’m not limiting my vote to just the performances when I vote for Carrie Fisher over John C. Reilly? Absolutely — nostalgia for Fisher’s work as Princess Leia and the sadness of knowing she’s long since gone are pushing me that way. But I cannot be dishonest: I’m still voting for Fisher. How about you? Are you gonna wreck it?
(9) Keith David, The Princess and the Frog vs. (24) James Mason, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: James Mason was a brilliant actor, and his voice is fun to impersonate, even if I do it badly. But Keith David’s performance as Dr. Facilier in my beloved Princess and the Frog is the kind of thing I will be pushing to propel as far forward in this supersized bracket. He gets my vote here.
I haven’t actually parsed the bracket to see who she might have to best to win the whole thing, but in a perfect world, the Ultimate Walt Disney Performance can’t really be anyone but Julie Andrews in/as Mary Poppins.
The best performance in the best Disney movie.
Keith David as Goliath I would consider voting over Mason’s Nemo for. As much as I love Dr. Facilier, though, he’s not getting my vote here… as little use as mine seems to be
