The Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances Bracket -- Round Two, Day Two

Talking...parrots?

Just look at that guy. That’s a guy living his best life. That’s a guy excited for the Pro Bowl today. (I presume someone outside of the players involved is excited for the Pro Bowl, right? It couldn’t be me.)

Anyway, folks, I hope you’re living your best life as we slide fully into both February and the second round of the Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances bracket. Let’s get into today’s set of matchups, shall we?

(4) Albert Brooks, Finding Nemo vs. (36) Gilbert Gottfried, Aladdin: Two brilliant comic minds, and two very funny performances. And I do genuinely think Gilbert Gottfried is very funny as Iago, too. But it’s kind of stacking the deck to have him face off against Albert Brooks in a role that goes well beyond just being funny. Over time, perhaps because I’ve become a dad in the interim, I’ve grown fonder of Brooks’ work compared to Ellen DeGeneres’ scatterbrained Dory. Either way, I vote for Albert Brooks.

(13) James Woods, Hercules vs. (20) Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman: It is at this juncture of the post that I will remind you of this: you are meant to be voting solely on the performances in question. I imagine I do not need to go into great detail to explain why I am reminding you of this regarding this specific matchup.

Of course, that reminder aside, I’m a realist: I expect that Julia Roberts will win this matchup. But since I am limiting myself just to these two performances, I personally would vote for James Woods, only because I think his work as Hades is superlative among the Disney Renaissance. Yet again, for…reasons, I expect Roberts to move on.

(5) Tim Curry, Muppet Treasure Island vs. (37) Don Rickles, Toy Story 2: I like Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head, but there is no doubt in my mind that Tim Curry’s role in Muppet Treasure Island is a masterwork of comic genius. Curry for the win.

(53) Paige O’Hara, Beauty and the Beast vs. (21) Keira Knightley, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: I figure that the next round will feature a pirate vs. pirate matchup (as in, Curry against Knightley), but I’m pulling for Paige O’Hara. Beauty and the Beast is my modern Disney favorite, and O’Hara’s winsome work as the intelligent Belle is a big part of what makes the film stand the test of time. I wonder if she’ll surprise anyone today.
