How wild is it, friends, that this year is so awash in late-80s/early-90s nostalgia? Think of it: three of the biggest movies of the year are based on Barbie dolls, Super Mario Bros., and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. (I still have yet to see Barbie, by the way. I’ve seen the other two, and I will allow that the new Turtles movie is pretty enjoyable. I say that as someone who was the right age for the Turtles, but have never cared about them. My wife and son have seen Barbie, and…well, my wife liked it. My 8-year old, I think, will probably not understand half of it for a long time. Anyway.)
All this makes me ask is: where is my Redwall movie? And my Carmen Sandiego action film? That’s what we need to make this year perfect. I know Netflix was going to do a Redwall show, but then they decided they would rather not pursue animated projects as much, which is a bad idea! Not a good plan, Ted Sarandos!
OK, I digress. It’s the last day of the fourth round of the Ultimate Disney Parks Attraction bracket. What else will you send into the Sweet Sixteen? Let’s find out.
(1) Spaceship Earth vs. (9) Enchanted Tiki Room (DL): Atmosphere is key with any theme-park attraction, and that’s why I’m voting here for the Enchanted Tiki Room. While I admire Spaceship Earth, and look forward to experiencing it again at some point in the future (fittingly), the vibes of the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland are just too alluring to ignore. You can’t get a Dole Whip at Spaceship Earth. It’s as simple as that.
How do you vote?
Spaceship Earth
Enchanted Tiki Room (DL)
(4) Muppet*Vision 3D vs. (28) Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (WDW): This one’s easy enough for me, but who’s to say that all of you will agree? It’s gotta be the Muppets here. (The Muppets vs. either Spaceship Earth or the Tiki birds is going to be interesting in the next round.)
Muppet*Vision 3D
Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (WDW)
(2) Jungle Cruise (WDW) vs. (10) Indiana Jones Adventure: So, I’m voting for the Jungle Cruise here, and I would do that whether it was the Walt Disney World or Disneyland version. It’s true that the skipper makes or breaks the experience — I have definitely been on a few cruises where the skipper wasn’t quite as solid at delivering the jokes, and it diminishes the ride somewhat. But Indiana Jones Adventure, as noted in past rounds, is technologically very complicated, meaning that your experience is often made or broken by…whether or not it’s even working. And it goes down A. Lot.
So I stick with the skippers here. How about you?
Jungle Cruise (WDW)
Indiana Jones Adventure
(3) Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (WDW) vs. (6) It’s a Small World (DL): It’s funny, someone pointed out in the last round that it’s a testament to the power of It’s a Small World that it’s done so well throughout the bracket, despite being low-key, relaxing, and not thrill-focused. Today, we’ll see how powerful it is. Can it take down one of the most thrilling rides in the Disney parks?
I…uh, sure hope not! I’m voting for Big Thunder here, if only because the background music is not as, y’know, repetitive. (But also, it’s a lot more fun.)
How do you vote?
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (WDW)
It’s a Small World (DL)
Vengeance for Mary Blair.
Jungle cruise is beating Indy??? Y’all.
