Here we are, everyone. It’s the big finish to the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket, and that means it’s time for you to vote in just one more matchup. No need to have any big introduction here — let’s get right into it.
(1) Singin’ in the Rain vs. (17) Beauty and the Beast (1991): The good news here is that the grand finale is between two of my favorite films of all time. I can’t exactly complain in the same way that I would if, y’know, Chicago was one of the finalists. Both of these are excellent films.
But if you have paid any attention to my ramblings before voting in other matchups, you know I am going to tell you that Singin’ in the Rain ought to win. At the very, very, very least, I would argue that a great movie musical has to have great dancing, and while “Be Our Guest” certainly has animated choreography, it’s not the same as Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor tap-dancing their way through a diction lesson, or Gene Kelly tap-dancing through a torrential rainstorm, or…well, you get the picture.
I love both of these films. And yes, I know that being a Disney-focused blog may mean that some of you are more predisposed to vote for a Disney film almost by reflex. But Singin’ in the Rain is the greatest musical of all time. Beauty and the Beast may well be the greatest animated film of all time, and a great animated musical. But live-action does trump animation some times.
That, of course, is my say. Time for you to have yours. How do you vote?
Singin’ in the Rain
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Singin’ in the Rain ran the table on this bracket, and it should win the whole thing. It’s THE movie musical; the platonic ideal of the genre.
I paid to see Beauty and the Beast around five times while it was in theaters. Singin' in the Rain, all the way.
