Everything old is new again.

Who else is ready for the weekend? I know I am, and it’s not just because I will get to see Fantasia on the big screen in Phoenix. (I’m calling it an early and surprising birthday present for me.)

Weekend or not, we have more matchups in the second round of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket for you to vote on right now, so let’s dive into it!

(4) The Muppet Movie vs. (29) La La Land: Here, again, there is no competition. I am on record as having very much enjoyed La La Land, though after having sat through the very bad Babylon, I might be less inclined to sign onto Damian Chazelle’s vision here. It doesn’t really matter, though, because The Muppet Movie is The Muppet Movie, and it should win in a walk.

(13) Fiddler on the Roof vs. (20) Phantom of the Paradise: A toughie, for sure, in part because you have two tonally different musical styles on display in this pair of films. But as I have already mentioned, I once played Tevye in a summer-camp production of Fiddler, and I’m Jewish, and so Fiddler gets my vote. How about you?

(5) Moulin Rouge! vs. (28) That Thing You Do!: I hope you’re excited for this matchup! I know I am! I can’t believe how excited I am! It’s a hard choice! But I’m going with Moulin Rouge!! I look forward to finding out how tough the choice is for you! And to see how quickly you spot the running gag!

(12) A Star is Born (2018) vs. (21) All That Jazz: I very much enjoyed A Star is Born, and was pleasantly surprised at the confidence Bradley Cooper showed behind the camera. It’s a really remarkable film. But it’s not All That Jazz, a truly incredible meta-riff on the life and times of Bob Fosse that pushes the creative limits to the breaking point. Everything old is new again, as evidenced by Star being the third remake of a classic story, but I give this to Fosse.
