WSS isn't just one of the best movie musicals ever made (maybe THE best?), it's one of the best films ever made. I love Mary Poppins but she ain't it (though, considering the audience for this substack, she's bound to win).
I must confess that I'm not voting for Cabaret solely on the film version. I read the book on which it was based, and watching Alan Cumming as the emcee in the Broadway musical was one of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. Of course, I was also smitten with Joel Grey when I first watched the film as a much younger person. So...it had to be Cabaret. It's the perfect combination of charm and misery.
West Side Story is, according to my ridiculous Letterboxd list of “500+ movies I love ranked,” my 17th favorite film of all time. Mary Poppins is remarkable, but only comes in at #87. Easy call.
I like the Music Man a lot. Heck, I was in a production of it as a teenager. But Cabaret is a top 5 movie musical. An absolutely stunning achievement, especially if you get a chance to see it on 35mm (it’s way more beautiful than the home media versions, which imo aren’t good transfers)

Voted for West Side Story even though I know it’ll lose, just to give some love to Rita Moreno’s performance.
I'm so bummed West Side Story is losing by so much. It's the better story & better movie! The songs! The dances! Rita Moreno!
Voting for Cabaret is totally a Shelbyville idea. Music Man all the way.

Which role did you play? (I was Charlie Cowell in my HS production.)
Winthrop Paroo!
Let's go Music Man! You can do it! Use the think system!
