That, my friends, is the face of someone who is more than ready for the weekend. And I know I am. But smug, relaxed face aside (and I don’t say that meanly; I think Anna Kendrick’s plenty talented), I hope anyone with the skills to perform in an a capella group and/or stack cups is ready to vote in today’s set of matchups in the first round of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket.
Let’s go!
(2) Mary Poppins vs. (63) Nine: I have said it before, and I will say it again (today and in future posts): we, as a society, need to rise up and stop Rob Marshall from directing movies ever again. He’s quite bad at it! It’s true that Mary Poppins should walk away from this one an easy victor, but let us not forget that Marshall made a very bad film in his adaptation of Nine. Not good. Vote for the nanny, friends.

Nine
(31) Pitch Perfect vs. (34) Footloose: In all honesty, I do not love Pitch Perfect. It’s fine! I would not have envisioned it spawning multiple sequels back in 2012, in part because of its modest scope and only mildly successful humor. But against the eye-rollingly silly Footloose…well, yes, the Aca-nonsense should win here.

Footloose
(15) South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut vs. (50) Viva Las Vegas: Yes, I know, Elvis Presley is Elvis Presley. But I don’t know if you’ve heard but Kyle’s mom’s a bitch. (This movie still kind of holds up a lot more than I expected!)
South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut
Viva Las Vegas
(18) Purple Rain vs. (47) Hustle and Flow: I don’t want to dismiss the solidly entertaining Hustle and Flow, but…I mean, it’s Prince. There will come a point where voting against Purple Rain is going to be an obvious choice, but that point is not today.

Hustle and Flow
I like that so far Mary Poppins is winning 100-0. Nine is getting exactly as many votes as it deserves. I love the stage version, and if you had told me in 2003 there would be movie of it and the best part would be Fergie, I never would have believed you.
“Eye-rollingly silly”?!? That’s some real John Lithgow in Footloose energy there.
