Friends, we have arrived at the final day of the first round of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket! Just four spots remain in the second round of 64 seeds, which means there are just four more matchups for you to vote in. And they’re all here in today’s newsletter!
Let’s go.
(6) It’s Always Fair Weather vs. (59) Rocketman: Gene Kelly appeared in many wonderful films, and pulled off a number of jaw-dropping stunts via dance sequences. As much as I adore the whole of Singin’ in the Rain more, the song clipped below, “I Like Myself”, features what may be his most impressive dancing stunt of all time. (And it also features an unnecessary bit of casual racism, which sucks!) Rocketman had a fine lead performance in Taron Egerton, but you know what it didn’t have? A tap-dance scene on roller skates. Top that, Taron.
It’s Always Fair Weather
Rocketman
(27) Cabin in the Sky vs. (38) Brigadoon: Cabin in the Sky is a fairly underrated musical, and my hope is that in spite of its underrated status, it wins here today. Brigadoon is fine, but I like the ambition and energy of the all-Black Cabin in the Sky (including the lovely Lena Horne).
How do you vote?
Cabin in the Sky
Brigadoon
(11) A Mighty Wind vs. (54) Tommy: My final unpopular opinion of the first round? I like A Mighty Wind a lot more than I like This is Spinal Tap. A Mighty Wind turned 20 a few months ago, and boasts one of the most tuneful soundtracks of a modern musical. (It also features a visual gag that made me laugh for five minutes straight in theaters. One of the greatest jokes in Eugene Levy’s career.) Nothing against that dumb, deaf, and blind kid, but I vote for the mighty wind blowin’ all across this land.
What do you think?
A Mighty Wind
Tommy
(22) Stormy Weather vs. (43) Hedwig and the Angry Inch: It’s Always Fair Weather had the most impressive dancing stunt of Gene Kelly’s career. But…man, I dunno that you can top what the Nicholas Brothers pulled off in the video clipped below. It’s enough to get my vote. You…trust me, you gotta watch this clip before you vote. Just do it.
Stormy Weather
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
It's strange, Josh, that given all of the previous theme park brackets, it took this one to have me regularly questioning your sanity. But enough about "A MIGHTY WIND is better than SPINAL TAP."
I absolutely adore Elton John, and enjoyed Rocketman very much. It's a fun, trippy romp through a lot of really great songs, with fanciful cinematography and a really solid performance by Taron Egerton. I can't vote against it...at least not in the first round.
