The Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket - Round Five, Day One

Dignity. Always dignity.

Well, folks, we’re here. It’s time for another weekend! Oh, and yes, I am back from my trip to Disneyland, which I am sure was a boatload of fun. (He said as he typed these words the night before leaving on said trip, so…yeah, I don’t actually know how much fun it was! But probably a lot!)

And yes, we have now entered the Elite Eight of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket. We started this whole thing with 128 seeds, and we are now down to eight movie musicals. While we have an array of options from which to choose, including a fully animated movie, two films starring Gene Kelly, two films starring Julie Andrews, and both a mother and daughter, I think we can all agree that these are all true-blue movie musicals. No more arguing about that!

Bu arguing about today’s films…oh, I am sure that’s going to happen. This one’s tough. No lies. Let’s get into it.

(1) Singin’ in the Rain vs. (4) The Muppet Movie: Like I said. This is tough. I won’t pretend otherwise, because I will remind you all again that these are two of my favorite, Desert Island, top ten movies. These are peerless films. I love Singin’ in the Rain. I love The Muppet Movie. There is technically not a wrong answer here.

But. It’s not just that Singin’ in the Rain is my favorite film of all time, though that helps. It is that, as much as I adore the Muppets (who even got to dance around with Gene Kelly on an episode of their variety series), they don’t dance like our man Gene. Yes, you get to see Kermit ride a bike in The Muppet Movie. Yes, they sing and do so exuberantly. But they don’t dance like Gene Kelly in the rain, or like Donald O’Connor doing anything for a laugh, or like Debbie Reynolds or Cyd Charisse.

I love both of these movies. I get it if you vote for The Muppet Movie. But I think Singin’ in the Rain should win this one.
