Since this might be my last chance to speak on it, one last treatise in favor of Community (or a Winger-speech, if you will):
Lots of sitcoms are about found family- workplace shows are usually built around this concept, shows like Friends and How I Met Your Mother are about choosing your own, etc.
Community was no different, but what in my estimation makes it special is that it’s explicitly about how those people help you grow, no matter what age you are. It’s written large with Jeff and the younger characters, but everyone is stronger and better because of their time in/alongside the Study Group. In between the spot-on homages to other shows and genres, there’s a beating heart that’s in there to the very end.
Oh man that M*A*S*H v Community one hurts!!I went with Community but I'd be very happy if either one moved on
I've recently been rewatching Friends, after Matthew Perry's death, and I've only gotten into the start of season 5 but man oh man those first 4 seasons are so so good. They really lucked out with a lot of that casting. Jennifer Aniston is just so charming you kinda have to love Rachel even if she is pretty selfish. And Matt LeBlanc & Lisa Kudrow bring such depth to Joey & Phoebe who could be so one note if not portrayed so well. And oh oh it breaks my heart watching Matthew Perry who is just so so so good and knowing just how much he was struggling off screen and that we'll never get more of his great comedic timing and facial expressions.
I don’t even think the cast on Friends is always that on point. A lot of times, most of the gang confuses yelling for being funny, and it gets pretty grating.
I never quite got the appeal of Friends. It was one of those shows everyone else watched, and when I gave it a try, I was left baffled. Maybe I would find The Office (UK) less appealing if I'd actually worked with people like Gareth or David, but the repellent behavior I saw in Friends was all too recognizable.
Friends has its moments where it deserves the hype, but I’ve always found it massively overrated, which is funny since I’m meant to cover it on my own blog eventually.
And I think one thing that isn’t brought up enough is how terrible the characters are as people, which I’m not against on principle but I always find it ironic when big Friends fans say they can’t stomach Seinfeld or Always Sunny’s cast- those shows know that those are awful people. Aside from occasionally realizing that Ross is A Lot, Friends really wants you to like them.

Six seasons and a movie!
C’mon David Brent! There wouldn’t be shows like Community without The Office (UK)

Come on, M*A*S*H! Grab that win!
I keep voting against Friends and it keeps coming back like a bad fungus
