Going with my heart over my head here. And that’s The Good Place. A hilarious show that ALSO has a lot to say about philosophy? And a series finale that made me cry multiple times? It’s Eleanor, Michael, and co. For me
A worthy contest. I watched Cheers as it aired, but I was pretty young for the first few years. It's hard to top the number of truly memorable characters that were created over the years on it, though. I mean, just Coach and Woody alone - each so pure and lovable in such different ways! But I voted for The Good Place - because it wittingly took what I love about modern TV like Lost and meshed it with the Found-Family sitcom - and stuck the landing! Hoo boy!
I voted Cheers, but want to drop a note here applauding The Good Place for maybe the best classical music needle drop in sitcom history with its use of Argo Part’s Spiegel Im Spiegel in the finale (scoring the “waves” speech).
I didn’t grow up watching Cheers, it’s not a series my mom was attached to and despite perusing Nick@Nite during its run sporadically, I missed its airings. I didn’t discover the show until a decade ago when I started watching it on Netflix.
So with practically no nostalgia, I can say that Cheers is absolutely the better show. I’ll concede that I think the initial twist with The Good Place is terrific, but I don’t think it ever topped that high again.
The Good Place is one of my favorite shows but Cheers is one of those sitcoms that’s like a cozy blanket. You heard the opening notes of the theme song and you knew you were going to laugh. The characters were people you could totally imagine hanging out with at a bar. I love the Good Place but honestly Cheers is one of the defining sitcoms of the 80s.

Is Ted Danson the greatest sitcom actor?
Sounds like an idea for another bracket!

Okay, sure, but does Cheers have a " I want to go see Lenny Kravitz' dick" joke? No? Well then you know what you have to do.
Holy motherforking shirtballs this is a hard choice.
