Friends, we’ve made it. We’ve made it to the arrival of a brand-new Scream movie! (I will have more to say at Slashfilm on Monday: for now, I will only say that while it does the job on the surface, I could not help but spot a lot of very dumb plot holes and would love it if these movies didn’t just redo the previous entries.)
No, but seriously, it’s time for the last day of the Elite Eight of the Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances bracket. As noted throughout this round, the bracket is taking a few days off after today’s vote. The Final Four — with just one matchup per day — will kick back off on Wednesday, March 15. (Meaning that our very last vote will be on St. Patrick’s Day.)
But first, there’s one more decision for you to make, and it’s right below this encouragement to share the newsletter with your friends. Let’s go!
(9) Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins vs. (2) Robin Williams, Aladdin: Here, we have two exuberant and irrepressible performers, both throwing as much of themselves into their respective roles. We have two memorable supporting roles (even if one of them feels like he ought to be the true lead), and we have two performers given the gift of incredible music from gifted composers and songwriters.
But…I mean. It’s gonna be Robin Williams, right? I hesitate only slightly in saying that I’d vote for him over Dick Van Dyke, but only slightly. Williams has to move onto the Final Four…doesn’t he?
What do you think?
It should be Dick Van Dyke. Yeah, he does the crazy accent and all the physical comedy and the Mr. Dawes role and all of that. But he also provides the endearing everyman balance to Andrews' otherworldy perfection, the sympathetic surrogate for the children when they flee the bank, and he delivers the emotional death blow of the film when he confronts Mr. Banks in "A Man Has Dreams." He actually has to carry a lot of what makes the film work.
This is going to be a landslide even if I wish it wasn’t.
