Welcome once more to the start of the weekend, folks. (Some of you might be off today, like my son, whose school gets a four-day holiday weekend. I am not so lucky. And my wife is traveling with her school to Disneyland. I am…well, still not so lucky. Oh well.)
You ready for some tough matchups in the bracket? Take a few minutes while you’re waiting in line for the latest MCU monstrosity, why don’t you?
(4) Amy Poehler, Inside Out vs. (29) James Marsden, Enchanted: Two very funny performers and two very funny performances. I kind of want a close matchup here, but I also think that Poehler should win this one. It’s one of her best and most complex performances (far beyond that of Leslie Knope, though I imagine that’s what netted her the role of Joy in the first place), and thankfully, there will never, ever be a sequel! Ahem.
Anyway…vote!
(13) Daniel Day-Lewis, Lincoln vs. (20) Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3: You may know that I am an agent of bracket-related chaos, and because of that, as well as because I wish to pursue that which gives me joy, I…would vote for Ben Kingsley here. I know he won’t win. I know why he won’t win. I don’t have to explain it, because you know it too. But Trevor Slattery is my favorite creative choice of the MCU, precisely because it goes against every expectation. Kingsley gets my vote. I hope he gets yours too.
(5) Charles Fleischer, Who Framed Roger Rabbit vs. (37) Paul Winchell, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Maybe I’m wrong to assume this, but I can see this one being kind of close. I’m sure many of us would agree that Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a better overall film, but Paul Winchell’s voice work as Tigger is pretty damn memorable in its own right even compared to Charles Fleischer’s multiple roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. (I would, to note, say that if you are voting for Fleischer, you should specifically be voting for him as Roger.) Down to the wire, I go with Fleischer. But maybe Winchell pulls this out.
(12) Hans Conried, Peter Pan vs. (21) Lindsay Lohan, The Parent Trap: Two excellent dual performances! (You remember that Hans Conried voices both Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, I hope.) And I will give this one to Hans Conried, just because there’s no pirate like Captain Hook, and no performance more memorable from such an immensely problematic film. Could Lohan ride a wave of 90s-era nostalgia? You tell me.
If you’ve never heard it, you should really check out the old time radio comedy MY FRIEND IRMA. Conried is part of the cast as the daffy Professor Kropotkin and he’s doing a German accented variation on his Hook voice. It’s amazing
