The Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances Bracket -- Round Seven, Day Two
I can't believe it: I'm losing to a rug.
Can you feel it, friends? Hell, I can taste it: the finish line of the Ultimate Walt Disney Company Performances bracket. Today isn’t our last matchup, granted, but we’re very, very close to that. Today, you’ll have to decide which voice performance to send to the Top Two. Tomorrow is when we decide the winner of the whole shebang.
Ready? Let’s go!
(11) Angela Lansbury, Beauty and the Beast vs. (2) Robin Williams, Aladdin: It does not surprise me that Robin Williams has made it this far. It delights me that Angela Lansbury has. In a perfect world, the Top Two of this bracket would be Julie Andrews vs. Angela Lansbury, two British icons who made a massive impact on popular culture through immediately memorable performances that have seared themselves into the brains of so many Gen X’ers and Millennials (see, Gen X’ers? I didn’t forget you!).
Ah, but we do not live in a perfect world, and I am pretty confident that Robin Williams is going to win this one. I don’t even know that I can mount a particularly stiff argument against it, either. Both of these performances are from the Disney Renaissance, and while I like Beauty and the Beast overall more than I like Aladdin, there’s little question that Robin Williams is the best part of Aladdin. Both Lansbury and Williams performed songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, and those songs are pretty much perfect.
In the end, I think it’s going to come down to the fact that while Mrs. Potts is a wonderful character that Lansbury performs with precision, the Genie is…well, the Genie is Robin Williams, and vice versa. But hey, I’ve been wrong before in guessing who wins.
What do you think?
I have been voting for Dame Angela throughout but I don’t think I can today. Robin Williams as the Genie is pretty much the defining performance of the Disney Renaissance.
Lansbury
Marvelous she
But she is losing.
Because Josh
Put the kibosh
On her, you see.
She didn’t bring out the vote
Cuz of this bracket, we note
She’ll kill Josh, Murder She Wrote!
Ms. Lansbury!
