The Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket - Round Five, Day Three
Sharp, cruel fangs? In THIS economy?
Can you believe we’re halfway through the Elite Eight of the Ultimate Movie Musicals Bracket? We’re inching ever closer to the Final Four, and I expect at least some closeness in today’s vote. You ready? Let’s dive in!
(17) Beauty and the Beast (1991) vs. (4) The Sound of Music: If I had to guess — and since I’m scheduling all of these posts a few days before they go up, it’s very much a guess — I would say that today will be a more challenging vote than yesterday’s, but not as much as our first vote.
And yet, for me, this is also easy. Many of the songs in The Sound of Music are catchy and/or well-written and/or memorable. It’s a good movie! Beauty and the Beast is a perfect movie. The Sound of Music has more songs, and certainly many truly iconic ones. You could even say its opening scene is better or more quintessential. But Howard Ashman’s lyrics are better than the lyrics in the songs of The Sound of Music. Not to say Ashman and Menken are better than Rodgers and Hammerstein overall, but in this specific battle? I think they win.
What do you say?
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
The Sound of Music
"Beauty and the Beast" is great, but "The Sound of Music" deserves this win.
Maybe this is a controversial opinion, but The Sound of Music is vastly overrated compared to other Rogers and Hammerstein shows. Julie Andrews elevates it, but without her... eh.
