OK, everyone, it’s time to dive into the unknown once more, as we tackle the final chunk of the Elite Eight of the Ultimate TV Comedies bracket. Two shows enter the thunderdome today, and just one is going to move onto the Final Four.
And if you ask me? Well…scroll down.
(2) The Simpsons vs. (3) Seinfeld: Now, if you have been paying attention to brackets like this one for a long time, you know that I sometimes tend to guess in advance which votes will be tough and/or close (they’re not always the same). And you know that I am often off in my guesses. So let’s see if I’m off today, because I think this one may be challenging. Even if you were to limit yourself to the first nine seasons of The Simpsons, to go in line with the nine-season run of Seinfeld, it’d be challenging.
I won’t say that I adored Seinfeld the way that some folks did, but I can also unhesitatingly recall plenty of its running gags and have favorite episodes and storylines. And since you’re not limiting yourself to just the first nine seasons of The Simpsons, the fact that its three-decade-plus run has had plenty of swings and misses should come into play.
My choice? Uh…you know how I always remind you I don’t vote in these? This is one of those times when I am quite glad about that. Have fun!
The Simpsons
Seinfeld
Never thought Seinfeld was funny. Which puts it in a part with post-2000 Simpsons. Good thing we have pre-2000 Simpsons.
I just finished reviewing the first 10 seasons of The Simpsons so I know from immediate experience just how good those early seasons are, with a reminder of where it will go after that glorious run. Even if it runs for another 50 mediocre years, nothing will diminish those first 8ish seasons.
I did go with Seinfeld, although I’m one of those people who think the show wasn’t the same after Larry David left (or hell, even the first director- season 6 is kind of rough in hindsight), but if The Simpsons wins, which is looking likely so far, it’d be deserved.
